Is Genetically Modified Food Safe for Human Consumption?

Genetically modified food from plants and animals whose DNA are taken through engineered modification and deletion of their natural genes. It is believes that GMO's food could eradicate starvation and extinction problem when it comes to some species of plants and animals.

You could eat any food from plants and animals enjoying every bite, unknowingly since they are plentiful in supply, cheaper and come handy anytime. Then you could find out later they are not naturally sources but made up of genetically engineered food that is modified with its natural growth process altered. You could curse the manufacturer or entirely avoid the products which used genetically ingredients. The catch up for how long one could be secure that every food that come in the platter is genetically free. Would you mind to eat or sell them or donate genetically modified food to save world hunger? Are they really safe for human consumption?

What’s this?

Genetically modified food (GM) are plants or animals food sources where the natural growth mechanism are altered through he help of genetically modified organism resulted in bigger, healthier and unlimited supply of crops, meat and dairy products. Most food stuffs such as soy, corn, potato, processed foods as well as starch, flour and baking powder were produce with genetic ingredients. At much as 70% of food found in the market shelves could contains at least one ingredients that been genetically modified food.

How does it work?

Genetically modified food becomes available and approved in the market since early 1990’s through the used of genetically engineered techniques including selective breeding, and somaclonal variation. A new genes are inserted in the plants and animals which changes its natural growth of Deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA particularly protein that helps the plants and animals to survive adversity such as weed killer and insects. Through mutagenesis (mutation breeding) an organism undergoes modification or deletion of their natural genes to produce a rare bred of crops capable with enough defenses against its growth adversary.

What does it promise?

Most advocate of genetically modified food strongly believes that it is the answer to eradicate world food hunger in countries suffering from starvation. Even the techniques use also helps to eliminate the dangers of having extinct animals and other species. Clinging to the facts that many studies had been conducted and the result comes out that genetically modified food as safer for human and animal’s consumption. According to Michael Philips, PhD., vice president for food and agriculture at the Biotechnology Industry organization, research now under way will likely make natural allergies a thing of the past by engineering known problem protein out of plants.

The verdict:

The argument that bio-engineered food raises allergy risk and other unhealthy effect does not been proven for a series of study conducted since found no evidence of real threat. Critics of genetically modified food activist disagree finding some fault with it still under plausible study citing lot of argumentative theory. The British medical association recommended banning of imported food unlabeled as genetically modified organism (GMO) because of plausible health risk it’s posed to consumer. Genetically modified food may both contain old and new allergen may trigger the immune system over reacts to proteins resulted in human allergy. A recently study conducted show that both humans and animals who consumed genetically modified food resulted in no significant differences when it comes to safety and nutritional values. It also noted that no residues of recombinant DNA ever found both in human and animals tissues which could attest to the bad effects of GM food to the body. To date Genetically modified food are safer to eat although it is banned in most countries which advocate against its used while other European countries even comes out with different program in support of genetically modified food. No one yet comes out with evidence anywhere in the world that GM food as culprit to any food related incidents. According to FDA they would still conduct study on every suspected genetically modified food that comes out in the market through extensive study and product review before food are introduced as safe for consumption.

Good and interesting article. The worst thing about the studies is that there can be no study proving long term safety. Short term is one thing, but the long term is what no one really knows about. I have read that GMO crops in some countries failed worse than regular crops so I think crops are always going to be dependant on soil conditions and weather. There is also concern as to why the rate of food allergies in kids and adults is increasing rapidly.

thanks Sam for your lovely comments. The study up to now still under lot of introspection maybe in the future the innovator would come out with a clearer explanation as well as new evidences that could link genetically modified food as very beneficial though their may be contradiction, hopefully it would be minimize with new control method.. ;-)

Very well researched article. Thank you.

I am personally against GMO since natural is the best when it comes to humans. When the DNA is altered it becomes other than natural. Time will tell if there are adverse effects of GMO beyond what the government is telling the consumer. I resent the fact that in the U.S. we are not informed of the GMO to make our own decisions by reading the labels. We need to know codes and inside info which most customers do not know. Thank you for bringing such an article to light.
